Defence
Bearcat-of-the-week honours go to second year defenceman, Sam Caldwell. It’s not always how many goals you score, it’s when, that can matter most. His second goal of the season came midway through the third period in the Miramichi game. It proved to be the game’s equalizer which propelled the Bearcats to complete the comeback in overtime. Being a major contributor always feels good.He got his hockey start in the North Sydney Minor program, working his way through the ranks to include a two-year stint with the North Sydney Bantam “AAA” Vikings. Next up was a two year stay with the Cape Breton Midget Tradesmen. Considered by many to be one of the top midget defencemen in Nova Scotia during the 2007-2008 season, he was selected first in the 2008 draft by Truro. As the only rookie on the Bearcat defence last year, he distinguished himself through his quickness, anticipation and general knowledge of the game. A strong skater capable of keeping himself out of trouble, he’s showing a willingness to join the rush this year. It’s just a matter of time before he’s ranked among the best in the MJAHL
ON TAP
Tonight, the Bearcats are off to Yarmouth to face a Mariners team in need of points. Tomorrow evening, the Woodstock Slammers roll into town on the heels of Wednesday night’s shootout win over the Bearcats. The Bearcats want that one back.
