Bearcat-of- the-Week honours went to rookie defenceman, Leon Denny. In Friday’s shootout win over Yarmouth, he put on an offensive display, not commonly associated with a young rearguard. He scored a natural hattrick in a six minute span to eliminate a three goal deficit and point the way to victory. He currently has eight goals, tops among Bearcat defencemen. He picked up an assist Saturday against Woodstock. Being strong in all three zones earns him huge minutes.

He came up through the Sydney Minor Program to play two seasons with the Major Bantam Cougars. He impressed in his second Bantam season with 13 goals and 22 assists. Last year he had a solid Midget year with the Cape Breton Unionized Tradesmen, earning him a 2016 selection by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. A late cut by the Eagles, he played exhibition hockey with the Yarmouth Mariners before returning to the Tradesmen.

Eleven games into this season, he sought junior hockey closer to home. The Bearcats were the answer and the recipients of a well-schooled young defenceman with loads of talent. Five weeks training in Montreal over the summer clearly prepared him for the jump to the junior ranks. He’s been given plenty of opportunities by the Bearcats to play in all situations.

The game originally scheduled for December 16 th between the Bearcats and Yarmouth Mariners had been scheduled for Wednesday March 1 st , 7:00 pm at the RECC.

Tonight, the Bearcats are in Bridgewater to face the South Shore Lumberjacks (7:00 pm).

Saturday, the Bearcats are at home to face the menacing Miramichi Timberwolves.

That game get underway 7:00 pm at the RECC.
