Bearcat Banter: Corner Turned

It was a long time coming but the wait was worth it.

The Bearcats finally found a way to pick up their first win of the season, a home victory over the Yarmouth Mariners.

The Mariners opened the scoring, but it was the Bearcats who scored the only two goals the rest of the way en route to the 2-1 victory.

The relief was obvious.  The win came ten games into the season – it was just a matter of time.

The team attitude was positive since the get go.  The coaching staff was committed to move the team in the right direction.

It takes time to have all on the same page.  Getting better remains a constant.

The goal now is to get the next one.  The Bearcats are set to be in Berwick Wednesday to face the Valley Wildcats, who defeated Truro 4-3 back in September.

Valley is fourth in the Division, with four wins in ten outings.  For sure, the Bearcats will be up for this game, which will be televised on Eastlink.

This weekend, the Bearcats are home for a pair of Divisional games.  First up will be the Pictou County Crushers at the RECC for a 7:00 pm start Saturday.

The Crushers defeated the Bearcats in two previous meetings this season.

The Summerside Capitals are at the RECC Sunday for another 4:00 pm start.  This will be the third meeting of the two.

The Capitals come to town second overall in the MHL.  The only blemish on their season, to date, is the OT loss to the West Kent Steamers last Friday.

The Edmundston Blizzard come into the week first overall with 20 points in 11 starts, losing only to Campbellton last Friday.

The 118 team Canadian Junior Hockey League rankings released October 14, have Summerside sitting second, behind the Rockland Nationals (CCHL), undefeated in nine games.  Edmundston sits fourth.

Bearcat-of-the-Week honours went to Truro’s newest acquisition, goalie, Austin Caley.  He earned the win Sunday, turning aside 29 of 30 shots directed his way.  He was signed last week when Frederic Cousineau was injured and will be out for some time.  The Texan came up through the Dallas Stars Elite Program (U-14, U-16, U-18).  Getting his first MHL in his first start is impressive.
