The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) has announced the Territorial Draft Picks for the league’s twelve teams. The Truro Bearcats selected two defensemen: 15-year-old Simon Mullen from Brookfield and 18-year-old Tim Porter from Lower Onslow.
“Taking local players as Territorials has always been a priority for the Bearcats,” says Bearcats General Manager/Head Coach Shawn Evans. “Obviously we want these players to be able to contribute to a successful on-ice product. We feel our two selections this year meet that criteria and Bearcats fans like to see our local boys representing our team and community.”
Evans on both players:
Simon Mullen – “He comes from an athletic family. I’ve known Simon since his days in Novice. Simon has a high hockey IQ. In my opinion, his best skill is his vision of the ice and passing ability. Simon is a defenseman who can move the puck in transition to create counterattack offense and has powerplay potential. Defensemen with these attributes are not easy to find.”
Tim Porter – “He had an excellent offensive season in Major Midget this year. Tim is a player who started in Minor Midget and has come a long way in developing his game. He deserves a lot of credit for that. His older brother Ryan was a three-year Bearcat. Tim comes from a family of high character and hard work. We are glad to add him to our organization.”
The 2021 MHL Entry Draft will take place July 10th beginning at 10 a.m., with live coverage of the first two rounds in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland on Eastlink Community TV, channels 10 and 610. Full draft results will be available at themhl.ca and on social media. Truro has two first-round selections: 10th and 12th overall.
